Without your commute and breakroom chats you are likely spending much more time in front of a screen than you did pre-lockdown. Many of us will continue to work from home for the foreseeable future, so it’s important to pick up good habits that will allow you to remain productive. Too much screen time causes fatigue, in fact, video calls are proven to cause ‘mental and emotional exhaustion’.
Here are some ways to reduce your face to face contact with tech, while keeping productivity high.
Try to switch up your break time habits, instead of watching TV take a walk. Rather than scrolling through Instagram, do some stretches or tidy your room. Your job likely requires you to be seated at a desk for the majority of your day, so when possible get yourself moving and give your eyes a break.
If you are doing some research or preparing for a project use a pen and paper rather than your computer to brainstorm. Not only does this give you a break from screens but you might find it allows you to think more creatively!
We’re so lucky to have the technology that we do that allows us to feel like we’re together even when we’re not. For a team catch up video calls are great, but daily Zoom meetings do take a toll. For a quick catch up a phone call will suffice, a simple query should be dealt with via email – just because we have all this tech doesn’t mean we need to use it for everything.
Hopefully we will all return to in person communications at some point, but until then we hope these tips help you to keep motivated whilst working from home!
